10 Rules for Students, Teachers, and Life by John Cage

Just as the title suggests, 10 Rules For Students, Teachers, and Life by John Cage is all about what it takes to be successful in life. He has many useful tips about how to get through life as well as advice on what to avoid doing in order to be happy.

• Nothing is impossible. There is no lose and win, there is only make-believe. I remember reading this rule from his book, and having been frustrated by something for so long, I realized that it really did apply to me.
• If you don’t know where to begin, start reading good books. I recommend the ones that have some sort of theme. The rule in the book about “nothing is impossible” really applies to life in general. So the next time you get frustrated with something you are not able to handle, try to pick a topic that you enjoy reading about.
• Have fun with your life. As a student, I had a lot of fun, but that is not necessarily the best way to live a life. Try to find things that you love, and then try to make a living out of them.
• Do not let all of the good things go to waste. This rule is actually what one of my favorite movies, American Pie, says. It reminds us that we should not be so afraid of failure and what might go wrong that we just allow it to take over our lives.
• When people criticize you do not allow yourself to become defensive. One of my friends often criticized me for my work at the bookstore, and after seeing me smile in the mirror in the mornings, she would say, “John, you look so happy.” She couldn’t believe what she had said, but she realized that I was the kind of person she loved.
• If you have to give up your dreams for something else, do not let it destroy your life. This is another of his 10 Rules For Students, Teachers, and Life, which he refers to as “A story about giving up.” I have given up dreams before for my career, my marriage, and my business, but I am happy with all that I’ve lost because of it.
• These are just a few of the many little steps that people need to take to create their own happiness and fulfillment.
